Surely it's in human nature to want people to know your story, and for all their strange abilities, they certainly act entirely human.]

Yeah, well, I guess I'm still alive. So that's something.

[Eventually, if they ever talk about it, Ben would find out that her mother never wanted her to face the horrors that the world could throw at her. It was always her father who insisted. Her father who taught her to shoot. Her father who had her stand there and watch when she shot a boy who was trying to drag her out of the car while he turned and then told her to shoot him again.

And she'd done it.

Lots of people aren't. Like my mom. My ex. My best friend's little brother. [A shrug.] But I think it's the people who walk around looking like they're still alive, but they're not, that's the worst. Not the zombies, but the people who still have a heartbeat and are just waiting for it to end. My dad got like that. But now he's gone, too.
