It afflicts each twice-cursed differently, its manifestation varying from person to person. Some say it is the result of coming so close to death that one catches a glimpse of the land beyond living, their minds and bodies scarred from the experience. Some say it is for wasting a god's time, inconveniencing him by having him come to retrieve their soul, only to not have died after all. Some say the afflicted are poisoned from birth, and that what we perceive to be a curse is something they've had within them all along. There are many theories, but no one truly knows where it comes from.
