Ben actually feels some relief, knowing that Cole will be able to sense his good intentions, that he doesn't want to know out of voyeuristic curiosity, that all he wants is to understand so that he can be a friend to Cole, help him through this crisis and whatever other ones might emerge. In a way, it's kind of nice, knowing that his powers (whether they involve emotions or thoughts or some blend) of insight will clarify Ben's own imperfect communication.
He steers them to a place where Cole can sit - to Ben, after seeing that other version of him, Cole's frailness is even more pronounced. He sits, too, and says even before Cole can begin: "I know it sucks. Being someone who has to explain who and what they are. You know that I know that. So I'm sorry for asking. I just - want to be able to keep up."
The earnestness of the words is backed up by the conviction Ben feels in saying them. It hasn't been something he's enjoyed since arriving here, needing to explain to people his powers. At least the one benefit of being so famous back home was that everyone knew already.
He turns a little to face Cole, or what he can see of him beneath that hat, and waits patiently, attentive.
