Click here to read what characters will experience when arriving in Anchor.

a. champagne supernova.

Normally, the changes in the sky are subtle, happening between glances or over the course of days.

That's not the case now, when the bright sky with its three suns is wiped away in an explosion of blue light, right at sunrise on the morning of January 1st. The light pulses across the sky in uneven blazes, sending out lattices of what might be lightning or something worse. There's no moon. No brightness. Just this lightning-storm brilliance in space, shedding little light on the world below.

And the suns don't come back on. As the day wears on, the supernova brightness in the sky starts to fade out and no new light appears. The sky is static and black, with no stars, no moons, no suns. The mild rolling blackouts that started with the opening of the relaxation room intensify with the sudden loss of solar power, as the backup systems try to compensate for the increased use of power.

For a moment, power goes out in Anchor entirely, leaving the place plunged into darkness.

The darkness doesn't last. Thanks to those generators everyone worked so hard to sort out, the backup systems struggle back to life, keeping the lights on and the bar, kitchen, and agricultural supports open, but there are some things that the limited power just can't cover.

b. tower of babelfish.

The first, and perhaps the most noticeable system to start failing, are the auto-translation programs. While not affecting every area in Anchor equally, communication between those who speak different languages is going to be a lot more difficult. The effects are spotty, coming and going, sometimes completely failing, leaving only people's naturally-spoken languages available. Sometimes it just struggles, making conversations sound a lot more like babelfish translations than recognizable speech. People themselves seem to be affected differently by the translation struggles, depending on who and where they are. There's no rhyme or reason to when and how it fails. But the problem persists through most of the month.

c. the hidden passage.

The second system failure is harder to spot.

At the end of what seemed to be a maintenance hallway, a set of doors have appeared from behind what used to be a shielded hologram of a dead end. The doors stick out from their surroundings: thick metal, barred heavily from the outside. A clear attempt to keep something locked away inside, not to keep people from entering.

For those adventurous enough, or foolish enough, to wrestle the locks open, a problem will reveal itself. A short flight of stairs, leading down into an area flooded by murky water. It's hard to see more than branching halls down below.

Those who choose to brave the water will find a hallway lined with bulkheads and sealed doorways, all guarding rooms that could be accessed with the right combination of smarts and brute force. It's the question of what would be ruined by the water if the doors are opened that might give people pause. What kind of secrets could be wiped out or destroyed if the doors are forced and the water passes through the bulkheads? Can the water be drained? How?

But there is one room open, or mostly open, where the bulkhead doors didn't quite manage to seal when the area flooded. It'll be a squeeze, for bigger characters, but the flooded room beyond contains artifacts preserved behind glass - strange medallions, strings of glowing beads, broken sceptres, arrows fletched with feathers from creatures no one has ever seen before.

Only one object isn't sealed away. It's a handful of small orbs, with shifting colors, held in place by a shield array that still seems to function, for the most part. They can be touched, can even be removed from the stand with the right know-how or a willingness to smash stuff.

But once an orb is touched, the colors start to spin more rapidly. The more it's handled, the brighter and faster the colors shift. Whether it takes hold immediately or not is up to you, but those who handled the orb will find the bright colors start to glow under the surface of their skin, in the shape of veins, glowing bright for a few minutes before fading. And those people bring a different kind of contagion back with them to the surface. Memory loss, communicated from one person to the next via contact. It can be partial or complete, or not happen to your character at all - they can be an unwitting "carrier" of the effects, passing it on without experiencing the losses themselves. The loss can last from hours to weeks, with carriers being "infected" for the duration of that time.

It also leaves behind magical traces, ones that don't fade after memories return. The cleverest might start to wonder if it wasn't a kind of inoculation, though against what, it remains to be seen.

"No, no, he used to be totally normal. I saw a picture of him once, he was just a regular dude. Whatever happened here that wiped everyone out, I think it turned him into that, and I think that whatever's in here had something to do with it."

He's not positive about much of anything, but why take risks, y'know?
circumitus: tall, lanky, uses teeth when giving head, and runs like a giraffe. don't do it, man... (no i know her type)

Wait. Waaait.

"You mean he was here when that shit happened before? You sure he didn't have something to do with what happened to the people here? He doesn't look very... sane."

A rich statement coming from Rey, but hey. Takes some crazy to know a crazy.

"I mean, he's got a squid growing out of his face. I don't know how sane I'd be if I had a face squid."

This maybe isn't the best time for jokes, though. He shuffles awkwardly, kind of resetting himself a bit mmmyep.

"The way I understood it, the last group of people who were here were divided over people wanting to leave, and people wanting to stay. Somehow the people leaving were putting the people staying in danger. I haven't been able to get the specifics out of him, but he was part of the group that wanted to stay here, and he was trying to protect everyone else who did, too."

"...Fair."

Assuming he was sane before the squid part happened to his face, but Rey just shrugs it off because the incoming details are by far more pertinent to their situation.

Her eyes narrow towards the webbed-up entry Peter's been guarding. "Doubt a guy like that talks in specifics. You think whatever was putting people in danger has something to do with what's doing there, then?"

It's possible that whatever it was turned Joe, but there's no certainty in anything yet.

"The way he was acting, I think it has everything to do with whatever's down here. He said we'd 'open the way to worse things' if we go down. I know it's vague, but it's all we have to work with."

Once upon a time Peter might have just gone down there to see it all for himself for funsies, but between Hadriel fucking with him and Anchor constantly having problems, he's maybe gotten a little paranoid.
circumitus: (your girlfriend is a south jersey whore.)

"And what happens if someone's already gone down there before you did? Or if they manage to find what that crazy guy warned about and try to come back up through your little 'barricade' -- or whatever the hell that's supposed to be?"

Peter doesn't look like the type who would kill to contain a potential biological threat to this place, but Rey knows better than to make judgements based on first impressions.

Peter slumps a little, his expression shifting from almost-confidence to a mix of exhaustion and annoyance, "Aw God, I hadn't considered that. Great plan, Parker."

He has had quite enough of his own bullshit already. but no, he is a puppy and would never hurt anyone. Except Kabal.
circumitus: (hay there grrl.)

Looks like she was right in her judgement.

"Well, if you need someone to kill whatever comes up for you..." Rey, in her infinite social tact, points a thumb to herself. She your guy, Peter. She'll hurt and/or kill anything with minimal amount of guilt (unless it happens to be someone she likes, that is).

[personal profile] itsnotaonesie 2020-01-15 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Assuming it's something that can be killed, I'll let you know."

Unless it's like, a person. He's not about people being killed, but if it's some kind of fucked up alien monster that wants to eat them, it's fair game.
circumitus: I CAN QUIT ANY FUCKING TIME I WANT. (i'm not drunk YOU'RE drunk)

[personal profile] circumitus 2020-01-15 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Rey just makes a dismissive click of the tongue.

"Anything can be killed. You just have to figure out its weaknesses, what makes it tick."

Something which she excels at. Hell, it's what she was tailored for.
itsnotaonesie: (i am not answering that shit)

"I mean like if it's some sort of weird, magical artifact or something. Which would be insane, but in a place like this it's not outside of the realm of possibility at all."

Just sayin', but if she does end up punching the idiot balls to death Peter wants to watch.
circumitus: Think it's time to reevaluate my life. (spent more nights on bathroom floors.)

[personal profile] circumitus 2020-01-18 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
That gets him a look.

"Magical artifact. Seriously, what is this, some fairy-dust unicorn fucker place now? You do know that there's not actually leprechaun gold at the end of a rainbow, right?"

Come on, Rey. Learn to be a little more open-minded.

[personal profile] itsnotaonesie 2020-01-19 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He just fixes her with his most serious, no-bullshit face.

"In the last place I was stuck, I had a friend who was an elven wizard with an enchanted umbrella and he transformed my MRE into a gourmet pizza with magic. If a leprechaun materialized in front of us right now, I wouldn't even blink."

He looks a little less 'open-minded' and more 'I have seen some SHIT', but y'know.
circumitus: (resting bitchface)

[personal profile] circumitus 2020-01-25 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Expression remaining neutral, Rey silently opts to take what Peter says at face value. Given the shit she's seen, she doesn't doubt that people come from crazy places where the logic her world abides by might not matter. And yet there is still a point to be made here.

"Yes, well. Have yet to see any elven wizards who can shit enchanted gourmet pizza magic in this place." Sorry, Peter, but she bungled that up on purpose. "So maybe we should stick to something like genetic experiments or hazardous waste. You know, normal stuff."

Normal for her, anyway.

[personal profile] itsnotaonesie 2020-01-25 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just because we don't have a magic pizza shitting wizard now doesn't mean that the people who were here before us, who were brought here in the exact same way as us, didn't have their own magic pizza shitting wizards. Anything's possible, is all I'm saying."

It's probably not a good thing that this has nothing to do with having an over active imagination. Life is fucking weird, dude.

"But, considering the nature of this place, your things do seem way more likely."
circumitus: Keep up the good work. (it's a 12/12/12 miracle)

[personal profile] circumitus 2020-01-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Waving a dismissive hand, Rey just scoffs at the notion but makes no further comment. Arguing over what kinds of people were here before without the proper intel seems rather pointless for now. Instead, she'd rather focus on the more pertinent details:

"So, other than the crazy-face guy, there's no one else around from before who could have an idea on what's going on here? Or give an actual straight answer, for that matter?"

There was the overly chipper voice on the network offering to 'help' when people were getting sick, but that conversation didn't really go anywhere, either.

He wants to grumble over her blowing him off and not taking his taco shitting wizard thing seriously, but she's right, there are more pressing matters at hand right now.

"Aside from him, I really don't thinks so. I haven't had any luck cracking into any archived information, either. It's just dead ends no matter where I look."
circumitus: There's my chippy! (where's my chippy?)

[personal profile] circumitus 2020-01-28 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Her brows lift quizzically. Sorry, Peter. This is more pertinent to her interests than taco shitting wizard things.

"Where have you been attempting to crack into their systems? Maybe you're not looking in the right place, or just looking at it the wrong way." Tejinder would have probably figured it out with just his brain... but he isn't here, so trying to think like he would is the best she can do.
itsnotaonesie: (this is fiiiine)

[personal profile] itsnotaonesie 2020-01-28 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"The security station, and whatever I can access from R&D, which isn't much. If these were the same sorts of systems that we had back home, I'd have been able to get into this stuff no problem."

All this wacky alien stuff? Not so much.
circumitus: Why was that not a good enough reason to put me to bed? (threw a jar of pickles at a police car)

[personal profile] circumitus 2020-02-02 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Well fuck," is all Rey has to say at first. When she really thinks about it, she's not sure if she'd feel comfortable with the suggestion that Tejinder ought to hook himself up to foreign tech. That kind of thing has never really worked out well in the movies, anyway. "Will just have to learn their programming language and codes. Might be able to salvage some manuals or something from the library."

Not exactly one's idea of light reading or a fun pastime if she makes any success of it, but... It's more productive than going down into some shady corridor that a guy came out of with a tentacle-face.
itsnotaonesie: (Default)

[personal profile] itsnotaonesie 2020-02-04 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter just raises his eyebrows and nods, like yep. It's a very 'well fuck' sort of situation.

"I haven't been able to find anything like that in the library, but I also haven't been in there very many times. Ben would be the guy to ask about that, he's gone through like everything in there. I almost think the dude lives there at this point."
circumitus: (skeptical fry squint)

[personal profile] circumitus 2020-02-06 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
For a moment Rey just studies Peter, weighing the pros and cons of her original goal in coming here. Sure, she could fight past him to get beyond that door if she really wanted, but--

"Will go check out the library, then. See what has been and can be salvaged, if there's any manuals or tutorials. Whatever programming language is being used here, it's not going to be pythia."

--she could probably make use of her efforts elsewhere.
itsnotaonesie: (80)

[personal profile] itsnotaonesie 2020-02-11 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
But then he would fight her back and it would be a whole thing and there's already more than enough things going on right now.

"Never heard of pythia, but I hope you have better luck than I did. I'll just... keep holding down the fort, I guess."
