Let's partyyyyyyy! [open]
Who: EVERYONE.
What: A meet-and-greet party for everybody in Anchor!
When: early October
Where: the VR room lobby
Warnings: none yet
Format: go wild!
[ The day before, a wild network post appears, from the username @aa : ]
hi everyone!
i just wanted to let you all know
the meet and greet party previously discussed in this space
will be held tomorrow afternoon!
it will take place in the vr room lobby
and of course everyone is invited
refreshments and games will be provided
but if you would like a little extra challenge
please feel free to bring something to share!
attendance is mandatory!
(lol just kidding)
seriously though i do hope to see all of you there ;)
[ She's also posted handwritten signs to that effect in the mess hall and several of the staircases. Just in case! ]
The day of, a party appears in the VR Room lobby area, as promised!
Though it's not brightly lit, the lights there are are brightly colored, creating a chilled-out evening atmosphere like you'd find at a club. Plush chairs and couches are interspersed throughout the room, and there's been a solid attempt to clean the place up, or at least do something about all the dust.
A shortage of conventional party supplies has forced Ami and Cho to get creative, so the tables and parts of the wall are decorated with paper flowers, and the buffet table is presided over by a number of ... weird, pink, glitter-covered, vaguely animal-shaped sculptures made out of spare plastic pipes and stuff. With googly eyes. If nothing else they're a conversation piece.
FOOD: The main offering is barbecue! There's a pretty wide assortment of meats, all of which Cho has certified safe for human consumption, and also certified delicious. Chips, dried fruit, and a few different desserts are available, including homemade chocolate chip cookies that Ami made herself (wich Cho's help). All the trays are helpfully labeled, including allergy information.
Any and all potluck submissions are welcome as well! Just set it down over here and make a little card of your own.
DRINKS: Sadly, the coffee machine is still out of order. But there is a cooler stocked with ice and a few different choices of juice and soda. Alcoholic selections are limited to two types of pre-mixed drinks, which are intentionally weak on the alcohol, but at least they're not tequila sunrises. If guests want anything stronger, they'll need to bring it themselves.
ENTERTAINMENT: In fiddling with the controls, Ami got the overhead speakers to play some music, but couldn't figure out how to modify the playlist, so it's just one song on loop. Maybe if she keeps the volume kind of low, no one will notice. No live music is scheduled, but if anyone wants to bring a guitar and jam for a while, they will be more than welcome to.
And most of the arcade games are online! Anyone for Fruit Ninja? Air hockey? Dance Dance Retribution? Virtual Billiards? Or perhaps you'd like to try out a full-simulation game in the VR Rooms proper? Now's as good a time as any!
Oh, and don't forget to enter the raffle! The winner will be chosen randomly and announced a few hours into the party.

Peter Parker | OTA
Someone (or maybe multiple someones) has been able to convince him to at least pop in for a little while, and naturally most of his attention is on the food because food is amazing and he's piled kind of a ton of it on his plate. Maybe he hasn't been eating enough lately, he's been pretty distracted. In an attempt to distract himself from being distracted by all the horrible distractions, he's making maybe not the best choices and knocking back some of those alcoholic bevs. His aunt's not here and neither are the COPS and you're not the boss of him etc.
And that's about as exciting as Peter's going to be for this thing. He's mostly sitting around with food and booze, finally making himself relax at least for a little while. Though there is a very good chance that he'll get so annoyed by this one goddamn song playing on loop that he'll drop what he's doing and try to fix the fucking music.]
no subject
He has his drink clasped in both hands as he heads in Peter's direction, trying to look as though he's capable of enjoying it. As for Peter himself, the kid looks as though he's maybe had a few too many drinks for one man, but as someone who used to get drunk to avoid dealing with the weight of his own paranoia, Carlisle isn't in a position to judge. He gives a slight bow in greeting.]
Peter. How is the food?
[That's not a polite question to start a conversation. He really wants to know.]

Okay, benefit of the doubt. Peter's a good dude and a good friend. Maybe he just didn't realize there was alcohol in it. Yeah, that's probably it.

Carlisle Longinmouth [open]
For the most part, he can be found lingering along the walls of the room, his arms crossed, his eyes closed in concentration. When not there, he may be near the tables, nervously attempting to put back together one of the paper flowers he managed to completely and utterly tear to pieces when unfolding it to figure out just how they were constructed. Lastly, one might catch him just beyond the doors to the VR lobby in the hallway, trying to literally talk himself into going back in, giving polite, but guilt-laden glances toward anyone who so much as looks his way.]

His eyes are closed as she approaches, though, and she's carrying a plate of barbecue. Weird how that one smell's getting stronger all of a sudden, huh? ]

Kieran Duffy | OPEN
[Otherwise, Kieran will mingle around and try to join in on some fun conversation in that delightfully awkward way that anyone who's known him for any amount of time will probably expect. He'll perpetually have a glass of something in his hand. Get him drunk enough and maybe he'll start singing some cowboy songs for everyone. Get him even more drunk, and he'll probably try to get people to join in, even if they don't know the lyrics.]
[If your character won't approach him on their own, then Kieran will probably approach them at one point or another with a big grin and wide, open body posture.]
Hey, buddy!
[He'll greet them the same way, regardless of whether or not he's met them before.]

Cho Takahashi | OTA
Cho is at the party early, bringing in trays of hot food and the containers of the mixed drinks to set things up. She also has a tote bag full of additional origami decorations, some folded the night before during her bout of insomnia, and some temporarily removed from their spots around her room, where they've been serving as permanent decoration to make the place seem a little less alien. Once she gets the food set up, she moves around the space with her bag, a stepladder, and a roll of tape. An extra helper, or even just someone to hand her tape strips and steady the stepladder, would be very welcome. As would the conversation. Mostly, though, it's the steadying hand on the ladder. In hindsight, she probably should have brought some flats to wear for this part of the day, but she just hates giving up the extra few inches of height that the heels give her, and she doesn't have any flats that match her dress.
B
Once the festivities have actually gotten underway, Cho takes the time to get herself some food and enjoy that warm fuzzy feeling that she gets from seeing people enjoy the taste of something she's made. Ami had a really great idea with this party, and Cho didn't realize how much she needed the distraction. People seem to be enjoying themselves, and after everything that's gone on in the last few months, it's very much needed. She tries to keep her eye on the food and drinks, scanning for when something seems to be running low. She's made extra of everything. All of the meats will keep well, and can be re-purposed over the week in other meals.
Whenever something looks like it's about to run out, she takes a little wheeled cart, and makes her way back to the mess hall kitchen to get the back-up. Which means she spends a fair bit of time scurrying between the two locations, pushing food through the city and resisting the urge to push the cart fast enough to ride on.
She is only marginally successful in that regard. Especially when it's empty. Nothing wrong with having a little fun, right?
C
It takes Cho a while to notice the music. The volume is low, and the chatter of conversation is high, and she's not really sure it isn't intentional. Somehow. She doesn't like house music all that much, and so it takes her a while to focus on it enough to confirm that, yes, it is the exact same song playing over and over and over again. Which, all right, even if it is intentional, surely Ami wouldn't get super mad at her for wanting just a little break.
Which leaves Cho crouched by the sound system with her ipod, trying to make sense of the thing. The speakers are working. All she wants is to have them play from a different source. That's got to be possible. Right? Maybe.
D
All in all, aside from a few hiccups, the party seems to be pretty self sustaining. People make their own entertainment, and Cho joins them. She eats a little bit of everything, and nurses a single drink for most of the evening. After a while, bolstered by the presence of other people, which must surely lessen the chances of getting stuck in them, she even tries a few of the games. For the most part, though, she just circulates around the edges of the crowd, watching people enjoying themselves. This is nice, for her. It feels almost normal. Throwing parties, being social, forming community. It's nice and normal and extremely comforting.
[[OOC: I don't like writing in brackets, so I'm a prose only person. I don't mind if styles don't match, though, if you only write brackets.]]

"There's about a million of these things up already, you can cool it with the decorations." He shouldn't have worn the full mask so she could see his eyeroll, but alas, maybe she can feel its presence anyway.

Eudora Patch | ota
So she makes up her mind to go and meet people. Which turns out to be a little harder than a person might think. Conversation. She's out of practice. Has she spoken to anyone these last few weeks? She makes herself a plate, because it's what you do. When someone who has clearly been through the buffet already comes up next to her, she pastes a smile she doesn't feel on her face and nods at the trays. "What's the best thing you've tried so far?"
After the food, she helps herself to a drink, which is far too sweet and not nearly alcoholic enough. She can do this. She sits herself down near the edge of the activity and watches people, nibbles on snacks, sips her drink, and wonders when she's going to start feeling like herself again. Fake it til you make it, right?
no subject
Ah well, if she decides to scold him, he'd totally deserve it, but he's still going to head over and see how she's doing. Maybe she'll think his drink is just juice????

dressed in his usual suit and scarf, loki conjures himself a drink as he goes around eyeing the animal sculptures. in fact, with a flick of fingers, the animal statues come alive, prancing about and neighing, tossing glitter everywhere.
though loki isn't going to stay long with the music like that. ]
Can we change that?
no subject
Anyway! She's about to go introduce herself when he does an odd gesture - and the dumb animal statues come to life. Ami's jaw drops. In a second she might be concerned about them getting glitter all over the food, but for now... ]

Ami Aihara | ota!
[ As the host of this party, Ami will of course be arriving well ahead of time to set things up - arranging decorations, finding room for all the foods, and so on. As the designated time approaches, though, she starts feeling more and more frazzled. She's never thrown a party like this before, especially not one this big or elaborate, and there's a lot to keep track of!
In the end, five o'clock arrives, and they're only almost done. As the first guests begin trickling in, Ami starts to freak out a little bit. Who knew planning a relaxing party could be so stressful? ]
Okay. Okay. Flowers, check. Meats, check. Cookies... where are the cookies? Oh my god, did we forget the cookies??
B. An Excellent Host
[ Once the party's underway, though, she manages to chill out a little. The hard part is over. But that doesn't mean her work here is done! As the host, it's her duty to make sure her guests have as good a time as possible. And since it's a meet-and-greet, she does want to meet everybody.
Anyone who's standing by themselves, or who she doesn't know, she'll approach at some point with a friendly wave and a smile. ]
Hi! Are you enjoying the party?
C. Fun and Games
[ Ami may be pretty mature for her age, but not so much so that she's content to just chitchat the whole evening. Eventually, she'll find her way over to the arcade games, and try to flag down a nearby
victimguest to play with. ]Hey, want to play something?
D. Tuckered Out
[ And finally... Ami stays the full length of the party, of course, because what kind of host leaves their own party early? But as evening turns to night, all the planning and preparing and chatting and playing starts to catch up to her.
Maybe if she just... sits down for a minute. In this chair. Oh gosh this chair is comfy. Maybe if she just kinda rests her head on the armrest. She'll just rest her eyes for a second. Yeah...
Yeah, she fell asleep. ]
C
He is squinting at one of those activities in particular, that he's seen people playing with, though the mechanics still escape him somewhat. The technology isn't familiar, but people are laughing, groaning in defeat or jumping in victory, and he drifts over closer, hoping to get a chance.
Once no one is near the screen they've been using to play games, Reynir stares at it, wondering if he'll be able to figure it out on his own or if he should ask someone. Which is when Ami comes over, asks if he wants to play something. ]
I'd love to!
[ Then, after a beat, just as cheerful: ]
I've just got no idea how!

Qubit | ota
[ Originally, it was Waltz that Qubit offered to put this raffle together for, but he hadn't heard anything back, so Ami's sudden announcement was a bit of a surprise. But when he asked her if they still wanted it, she eagerly accepted, so here it is.
He's set himself up at a table near the entrance, on which he's placed a box with a slot, some preprinted forms, and a handful of pencils to fill them out with. It's a little more old-school than he'd typically go with, but given the number of people he's met who are intimidated by all the machines, simplicity seemed the better option. And Ami was kind enough to make him an exuberant-looking sign proclaiming "RAFFLE!", so it's hard to miss. He mostly tries to catch people as they come in- ]
Evening! Care to participate in the raffle? It'll only take a minute.
[ ooc: Submit your raffle entries here! Replying to this toplevel isn't necessary, and they don't have to fill out the form completely if they don't want to. He's also more than willing to help anyone who has difficulty filling out the forms, or who needs help brainstorming what they'd want as a prize! Hmu if you want to handwave anything like that. ]
B. Workaholism
[ A little later, Qubit leaves the table and heads to the floor to do the things one generally does at a party. Grabbing a token amount of food, wandering among the guests, stopping to introduce himself to someone new or make light conversation, you know. The things adults do at boring adult parties.
What he's not doing, though, is relaxing.
He may not be working security in any official capacity, but keeping his eyes peeled for trouble has become a habit. On Earth-β, every such gathering of imPorts was a potential target, and the attacks didn't always come from without.
Everything he's doing here has a purpose. The raffle lets him size up everyone who comes in, learn something about everyone who participates. The wandering is patrolling, the chitchat is networking, and he doesn't touch the alcohol. If you watch him for any length of time, it's clear he's not letting his guard down.
Someone ought to make him do something fun, for a change! ]
A
Hey, Qubit! Whatcha doin' over here?

Genji Shimada | OTA
Have one grumpy and withdrawn ninja in full armor sulking around scooping food onto a plate and disappearing into the hallway with it because he is most definitely not going to take his helmet off amongst a bunch of strangers to eat. But he is starving so it is a contest of wills between his sense and his stomach.
He'll be marginally happier when he discovers the arcade where he is going to crush Ami's high score on Fruit Ninja. Being both an actual ninja and obsessed with video games is giving him an unfair advantage, but maybe everyone else should just git gud?
Eventually he'll be standing near the edges of the party and just observing people. One of Cho's paper origami stars in his fingers as he rolls it across his knuckles back and forth.
Poison | OTA
And yet... here she is, hovering over the food with some expression of interest and picking up a few things to put on her plate before she sits down to eat, filling out one of the raffle cards and giving some serious thought to what she might write for her 'interesting fact', and picking up a drink or two throughout the night. She isn't much of a drinker when it comes to alcohol, so she keeps it light, but by the time the party comes to a close she's feeling just a little bit merry and offering to draw people with the sketchbook and pencil she carries everywhere.
She does notice that the music is on a loop after about fifteen minutes of hearing the same intro over and over again, but it's quiet enough that she doesn't mind it. And she will, at least, give the games a look. She finds the air hockey table interesting, asking the nearest person how to play it, and has a good go at fruit ninja too, though she isn't terribly good at it (she still has fun).
Once or twice she'll disappear outside into the hallway to take a breather, but more often than not, she's actually mingling, smiling and laughing, and genuinely having a good time.

"Hey. Sorry if my breath smells like barbecue." Which is not at all a romantic thing to say, but also this is Peter

Julie Grigio | OTA
For the entertainment, she makes an immediate beeline for DDR once she has a couple of drinks in her and will definitely be encouraging anyone who is nearby to get up on the dancepad next to her and duke it out.
Late in the night, when she isn't actively enjoying what the place has to offer she'll be seated somewhere with a drink (and maybe a morsel of food), watching the other people gathered and looking more than a little pensive before she abruptly comments-.
"... Anyone else noticed the same song's been playing all night?"
did somebody say DDR
Buuut a little while later, she happens to be near the DDR machine when Julie starts looking for an opponent. And Ami hasn't played DDR in a while, so it is tempting...
She nods, but puts her hands on her hips. "Okay, but you better not drunkenly smack me in the face or something. I reserve the right to call you a cab if you do!"
i said DDR

onni hotakainen ❄ ota
Onni shows up late, having had to force himself to leave his room, and dressed in his usual tunic and fur cloak. What's a little different than usual is that he has his kantele with him, and is carrying both a bottle of vodka pilfered from the bar and a large blueberry and cream pie, the latter of which he places on the table and labels (oh-so-helpfully) only as Mustikkapiirakka. Not exactly descriptive, since it translates straight to 'blueberry pie,' but anyone brave enough to try it will find it to be delicious.
The one benefit of this party is that people seem to find it acceptable enough to drink, and so he cracks open his vodka and sips it straight from the bottle, like a savage, until he's tipsy enough to get past most of his social anxiety. Once he's pleasantly buzzed, he puts the bottle aside and people-watches for a while - feel free to notice him staring, he's not subtle! After a while, he realizes that the same song (and an awful one at that) is playing over and over in the background, and he's just drunk enough to pull out his kantele and start playing music. Most of what he knows are Finnish folk songs or songs that were popular enough in Finland before the Rash and have managed to survive. Mostly he sticks to upbeat songs that are easy to dance to, but occasionally when his mood flags a little, he might play ballads or more melancholy songs.
Anyone who wants him to sing will have to ply him with far more alcohol than he's had so far.

It's lonely. She's used to it. What more, it's a hell of a lot less stressful than the weeks she had spent in the sky prison, evading capture from its synthetic inhabitants while she worked out a plan to release a few prisoners. Something which Rey never really saw herself walking away from alive, yet here she is.
Always with a drink in her hand, she's been keeping herself looking busy -- but singing and dancing is not among them. A couple times she catches a pair of eyes noticing her while she was intending to coast by unnoticed, and while she doesn't draw any more attention to herself than necessary... she is pretty sure she isn't being as inconspicuous as she had hoped.
Oh well.
It isn't until that individual kicks off a few songs that Rey ditches her previous efforts and really pays attention. That's... a kind of melody she hadn't heard in a long time. She recalls some soldiers camped out under an icy sky, singing songs like that. Who was she during those memories, though? It's not Russian, but it's something close. Once the singer has finished playing, she decides to abandon the shadows with her glass of bourbon, approaching him.
"That music... What was it?" Rey asks, her tones flat and robotic when she speaks despite attempting a conversational start.
